Tools For Monitoring and Reducing Latency

Better information is the starting point for balancing the competing demands of reducing latency, reducing traffic, and providing a service based architecture that meets all the needs of data clients.

Rai's products can reduce latency in two ways: through lower latency solutions, and by providing information on latency both through Rai's products and through other applications.

Lower Latency Products

  • Increased TIBCO Rendezvous Performance: The Rai Cache dramatically increases performance through TIBCO Rendezvous by optimizing Rendezvous communications.
  • Choice of Transports: The Rai Cache supports RV, TCP, and ciServer transports today and will be adding new transports such as 29West LBM in the near future. A choice of transports allows each user and application to use the transport that best meets its requirements. Remote applications can connect to the Rai Cache using TCP, while local applications can use a multicast based transport such as RV. Whatever the combination, the Rai Cache can provide transport and protocol bridging services allowing integration across a variety of platforms.
  • Fully Multi-Threaded: A fully multi-threaded architecture allows the Rai Cache to benefit from the increasing performance capabilities of multi-cpu machines including dual-core processors. The Rai Cache isn't restricted to the performance of a single processor on the machine. Multi-threading also allows the Cache to enrich data while still maintaining extremely low latency.
  • Send, Then Save: The Rai Cache reduces latency through the Cache by sending updates before updating internal data stores.

Latency Monitoring

Rai Technology's latency monitoring tools can monitor and display latency information across the network, through applications, and using different transports including TIBCO Rendezvous, ciServer, and tcp.

  • Latency Tools: Rai's latency monitoring tools pingrv, pingci, and pingtcp provide an easy way to measure latency. The ping tools can monitor latency through a Rai Cache, or through a Reuters TIC or RTIC. They can also be configured in a reflection mode to monitor only network latency.
  • Display: Rai Insight can display latency automatically by detecting latency pings
  • Rai Cache: The Rai Cache can track latency information and provide statistics at regular intervals.
